This
package centres around you learning how to mush or drive dogs. Our
past experiences indicated to us that most people like a ride or two on
the dogsled but soon feel like they would like to try to drive the
team. And so this package was born. It runs for a week with no
pressure, no grading, just the thrill of working with Siberian Husky
dogs in Saskatchewan's grand wilderness.Generally, this is how the package works:
You arrive the first day in time for lunch. Great timing!
After a nourishing lunch we make our way out to meet the dogs individually, giving you a chance to get acquainted with your new friends. We go through some of the basic equipment and possible safety concerns. Then the dogs are harnessed up with your help and you go for a ride.
We want you to experience being a passenger first so you can give all of your attention to the dogs and how they are working. It also enables you to take notice of some of the driving techniques and language the driver is using. Little words like “gee” and “haw” or perhaps “whoa” are demonstrated so you understand their true importance!
Usually by the afternoon of the second day you are at the back of the sled and your guide is the passenger. Good chance that by the third day you are doing short solo runs. By the fourth day we will go with two teams on a longer trip.
By weekend you are driving your own team with some confidence; how many dogs will be determined by your progress.
A wonderful aspect of this package is that between training periods with the dogs there is time for activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, horse-sleigh rides, selective horse logging involvement, skijoring (with both dog and horse), horse back riding, timber wolf howling and more.
Oh yes, and the moose. Good chance we will see this magnificent ungulate sometime along our travels. That’s an experience on its own!
This package can be experienced by anyone in average physical condition, who has a bit of a sense of adventure. Sleep will come easy after a day with the dogs in the fresh air.
