The freedom trail echoes with the spirit of the fiercely independent citizens who resisted “taxation without representation” creating our American heritage. Boston is a beautiful amalgam of sparkling skyscrapers and venerable colleges and universities, interspersed with historic buildings and monuments. From here you can visit Salam, Concord, Lexington and Plymouth Plantation, as well as scenic Cape Cod. BAR HARBOR, MAINE It’s easy to see why this tiny island town was a resort mecca for wealthy East Coast residents. Before a disastrous fire in 1947, as many as 200 of there opulent summer “cottages” dotted the coastline. Bar Harbor shares Mount Desert Island with Acadia National Park, 35,000 acres of lakes, waterfalls, rivers and the 1,530 foot Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East Coast. HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA Call it “Hardy Halifax” the city was devastated in 1917 when a ship loaded with explosives collided in the harbor, flattening nearly half the buildings in town. It’s also historic Halifax, with North America’s oldest formal Victorian gardens, plus Canada’s oldest Protestant Church. SYDNEY NOVA SCOTIA The rugged hills and picturesque valleys of Cape Breton Island lured homesick emigrants from the Scottish Highlands. It attracted Alexandra Graham Bell, too. A summer resident for 35 years, the great inventor said that for “simple beauty” the Island beat the Rocky Mountains, the Andes and the Alps. The interior encompasses the Bras d’Or, an inland sea with perhaps the least polluted salt water in the world. Along the coast the scenic Cabot Trail winds past craggy coasts and small fishing villages. CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND A provincial capital with a distinctly English feel. Where red double-decker buses motor along streets lined with gingerbread-trimmed Victorian houses; and tea is served promptly at three. QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC, CANADA With it’s French cuisine, French language and heritage, Quebec is the cradle of French civilization in North America. There’s old Lower Town with its Latin quarter and the narrowest street in North America. While on a higher level in Upper Town, the towers and spires of the imposing Chateau Frontenac Hotel lend the city an aura of La Belle Epoque. Not surprising the entire area has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. MONTREAL, QUEBEC Part French, part English, totally intriguing. Explore the cobblestone streets of lamp-lit Old Montreal; visit the tranquil Botanical Gardens; try your luck at the high-energy Casino de Montreal. MS Maasdam The MS Maasdam is the fifth ship in Holland America Line's more than 130-year history to bear the name. Featuring an interior motif that pays homage to the historical Dutch East and West India companies of the 17th through 19th centuries, the centerpiece of this elegant ship features Luciano Vistosi's "Totem," a monumental sculpture using nearly 2,000 glimmering pieces of glass, prominently displayed in a soaring three-story atrium. She exudes a warm, elegant feel throughout by combining rich, polished woods over $2 million dollars of art and antiques. The MS Maasdam completed all Signature of Excellence enhancements to her public rooms and staterooms in Spring 2006. At 720-feet, the MS Maasdam is designed to carry fewer guests while providing them with more space for maximum comfort. Accommodating 1,258 guests, many staterooms feature commanding ocean views, and each of the 149 suites has a private verandah.
