Day 2 - HALIFAX SIGHTSEEING & AT LEISURE Originally settled by the British in 1749 as a counter-measure to the French settlements in the area, Halifax quickly became one of the most important strategic outposts of the British Empire. Today, an appealing blend of new and old, Halifax remains the dynamic and colourful center of Nova Scotia with its tree-lined streets, a thriving traditional waterfront next to modern towers of glass and steel, and many excellent restaurants, shops and attractions. This morning explore several points of interest on our city tour, including a visit to the Citadel National Historic Site. Here we learn about daily life, hundreds of years ago, in this great hilltop fortress and take in the sweeping views over the city and harbour from its massive walls. The afternoon is yours to enjoy. Why not join our optional excursion to picturesque Peggy's Cove? (Full Breakfast)
Day 3 - HALIFAX – SHERBROOKE VILLAGE – BADDECK (2 nights)
Leaving Halifax, travel north along Nova Scotia’s eastern shore to the Fisherman's Life Museum, where you'll learn about the life of a coastal village family in the early 1900's. Next, travel to historic Sherbrooke Village, a living museum depicting a late 19th century Nova Scotian village. Step right into the past at the wood turner shop, the blacksmith, the pottery shop, the village courthouse, a makeshift jail and the residences of both rich and poor. Later, cross the Canso Causeway, built with over 10 million tons of rock more than 50 years ago, to Cape Breton Island, one of the most beautiful and dramatic islands in North America. Travelling north arrive in the little village of Baddeck on the shores of charming Bras d’Or Lake. (Full Breakfast / Buffet Dinner)
Hotel: Silver Dart Lodge (MF)
Day 4 - CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS & CABOT TRAIL EXCURSION
This morning, visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, where many of the great inventor’s personal artifacts and mementos are on display. Then journey along the dramatic Cabot Trail, pausing along the way to visit quaint Margaree Harbour on the west coast, before rising high into Cape Breton Highland National Park at the northern end of the island. Mile after stunning mile, the Cabot Trail offers up an amazing coastline with jagged peaks rising out of the sea, deep-walled canyons, sandy beaches, majestic cliffs and abundant wildlife. This is a landscape you just have to experience! Return to Baddeck in the late afternoon. (Full Breakfast)
Day 5 - BADDECK – WOOD ISLANDS FERRY – CHARLOTTETOWN (2 nights)
Leaving Cape Breton, re-cross the Canso Strait and journey to the quaint fishing town of Pictou. Cross the Northumberland Strait by ferry to Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest and greenest province. Then travel through the vivid colours of its gently rolling landscape to Charlottetown. (Full Breakfast)
Hotel: Rodd Charlottetown (F)
Day 6 - PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND SIGHTSEEING & AT LEISURE
Today a local guide leads your exploration of Prince Edward Island. Stop in the little bayside village of North Rustico on the north shore for a look at the quaint little red and white Harbour Lighthouse. Then explore the spectacular shoreline of Prince Edward Island National Park with its beautiful red sandstone cliffs, miles of sandy beaches and abundant wildlife. In Cavendish, visit Green Gables, the storybook home of Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables." The author grew up on Prince Edward Island and drew on her childhood experiences to describe the wonderful pastoral world of her bestselling novel. The remainder of the day is at leisure in Charlottetown. (Full Breakfast)
Day 7 - CHARLOTTETOWN – SHEDIAC BAY – MONCTON
Today travel to New Brunswick via the 8-mile long engineering marvel of the Confederation Bridge, the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water. Like the other provinces on our tour, New Brunswick was settled by groups of people from both France and Great Britain, and this shared heritage is reflected today in the fact that it is the only officially bilingual province in Canada. Stop at Shediac Bay and join a private lobster Highlight Lunch Lobster Cruise exclusive to your group. The local lobster fishermen crew will tell you about this traditional delicacy and the methods used in lobstering while you enjoy an onboard lobster lunch prepared in the traditional New Brunswick way (weather permitting). Next, visit a local winery and enjoy tasting various fruit wines produced locally. Tonight, enjoy a Farewell Dinner celebrating a great journey through the Canadian Maritimes. (Full Breakfast / Highlight Lunch / Farewell Dinner)
Hotel: Delta Beausejour (F)
Day 8 - MONCTON – HOPEWELL ROCKS – DEPART HALIFAX
This morning travel south to the Bay of Fundy to see the effects of some of the highest tides in the world. The peculiarly shaped Hopewell Rocks reach up to 50 feet in height; learn from your interpretive guide about this group of amazing "flowerpot" rock formations sculpted by billions of gallons of water flowing in and out of the bay twice a day. Then bid farewell to your Tour Director as you embark on an independent rail journey back to Halifax, where a complimentary transfer is provided to Halifax International Airport or to the tour hotel in Halifax for passengers extending their stay.
