After a presentation, a tour of the Hospital and lunch we left for
Putrajaya. Putrajaya is the Malaysian Government equivalent of
Washington DC. I had been to Malaysia a couple of years ago to a Trade
Show and really liked Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. This new city is
built to house the Government offices away from the hustle and bustle
of Kuala. The city is magic in itself, it looks like the Architects
have been given carte blanche and each is trying to outdo the other
with a different and spectacular new building. Even the bridges are
awesome each one is different and unique.
We checked into the Shang Ri La, and right away we were transformed
into flower land. The next day we were scheduled to attend the Flora
Fest an annual parade of Floral Floats, in preparation there were
flowers everywhere. There are competitions among the Hotels who deck
their lobbies out with flowers and everyone wears garlands. After a
short rest and catching up on emails we departed for Kuala Lumpur for
an evening presentation and dinner put on by Tourism Malaysia for A
Mega Fam program of participants from 23 different countries. As we
were already going to be there so we were included in the program.
There several presentations on what we could expect of the Festival the
next day, dinner, a presentation of certificates to all participants
and garlands of flowers for us all. We returned to Putrajaya for the
night.
We had an early start the next morning for the Flora Fest. We were
seated in the VIP seats along with other Agents and Media from the 23
different countries. The King and Queen sat less than 50 feet from us
and arrived in an open carriage. It was amusing to see that one little
girl perched herself on the front of their private section and no-one
moved her. Obviously security is not the issue it is in other
countries, which is refreshing to say the least.
They have a unique system for the King and Queen, the Head of the
various tribes within Malaysia rotate on a 6 yearly basis, so each King
is King for the next 6 years then gives it up to the next tribe in turn
6 years later. The current King is very young so it is possible he will
get another go around down the road.
The country is stable politically and is really giving China and Hong
Kong a run for their money with opportunities for Business and Trade.
The government has implemented a “Malaysia My Second Home Program” and
for $70,000 US you can buy a home in Malaysia and the Government will
extend a 5 year permanent resident Visa to you. Over and over again it
was emphasized to us that Malaysia welcomes and respects all races and
religions and even honors the holidays of each of the religions,
meaning they probably have more holidays than most other countries. We
were certainly made welcome at every place we went.
We watched the floats as each stopped in front of the King and Queen
and performed a dance act. They were beautiful. Malaysia’s version of
the Rose Bowl Parade.
After the festival we toured the city and stopped for some shopping and
lunch before visiting the botanical garden and returning to the hotel.
That evening we enjoyed a seafood dinner at Azur a local seafood
restaurant in the botanical garden, overlooking the lake.
Day 4:
An early breakfast and check out from the Hotel before heading to the
airport for our transfer to Penang. The night before Max our driver had
driven up to Penang with our heavy luggage and transferred it to the
Hotel. He was waiting to pick us up on arrival. We proceeded to do some
sightseeing visiting a Batik Factory, the Tropical Spice Garden, the
Watchaiyamankalaran and Burmese temple, and a two Buddhist Temples
before taking lunch at a local café and checking into the Park
Royal Hotel. A good standard chain Hotel. Enroute we passed the

Personally I was not really aware that Malaysia had been caught up in
the Tsunami – but Penang did take a severe toll. I guess one reason we
haven’t really heard too much about it is that the Malaysian Government
stepped in right away building temporary long houses sectioned into
apartments while they built a brand new apartment complex for the
victims. The apartment complex overlooks the sea and is almost ready
for occupancy. We asked how much people would have to pay either in
rent or payments for the units and how long they were allowed to stay
in them. We were told they were completely free of charge to the
victims. Amazing. Why is it we always hear the negative and never these
kind of stories that warm the heart to what a Government can do if they
put their mind to it.
After a short break we headed back into the city centre and took a
Trishaw ride around Fort Cornwallis and the city. (Bicycles with seats
on the front) Afterwards we spent some time at a local market shopping.
On our return to the Hotel the others went to a local restaurant “the
ship” which they really enjoyed. I was under the weather with an
allergy the air conditioning affecting my throat and sinuses so I had
an early night.
Day 5:
After an early breakfast at the Hotel (another good buffet) we departed
for Penang Adventist Hospital for a presentation and site inspection.
This Hospital has an American Administrator and is the sister Hospital
to the Loma Linda in California.
